Good evening and welcome to the Coles Lane for today’s Total Motion Midland Football League 1st Division fixture against Uttoxeter Town. I would like to extend a warm Paget welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Uttoxeter who have made the journey to be here tonight.
The season kicked off on Saturday with a superb team performance away at Leicester Road where Paget emerged victorious by one goal to nil. The team spirit, effort, determination and will to win was evident throughout and this was all the more impressive considering that amongst the fourteen players used, no fewer than nine were debutants. It was also great to see Myles Phipps come off the bench to notch the winner. Myles has progressed so well since making his Paget debut aged sixteen, four seasons ago, and it is pleasing to have ‘one of our own’ grabbing the headlines.
Over the course of the closed season we made no secret of our desire to overhaul the squad and to bring in young, hungry, ambitious players who showed a desire to play for and excel in a Paget shirt. Towards the end of last season it became apparent that things had gone a bit stale, but all the new lads have been a breath of fresh air and I believe they have also helped to instil a re-found determination and desire into the players who we have retained from last season.
It is fitting that we have overhauled the squad at a time when we have changed so many other things in and around the club too. We welcome Gavin Allers to the coaching staff, Nick Williams to the committee and Dom Sweeney to the Media Team. We have a new club logo and a new kit and most of all we have a new home here at Coles Lane with Sutton Coldfield Town. Everyone at Sutton has been so welcoming to us and it was great to spend some of England’s World Cup journey with them here in the clubhouse at Coles Lane. I would like to thank Nick Thurston and Neil Murrell for making us feel so welcome and we look forward to a long and successful stay here at Coles Lane.
Away from the league there are also the many cup competitions to look forward to this season. In the Midland Football League Cup we have been handed an away tie in the first round at Chelmsley Town, the winners of which will host Cadbury Athletic. We have also entered the JW Hunt Cup, Birmingham Midweek Floodlit Cup and the Walsall Senior Cup. Meanwhile in the FA Vase we will now go straight through to the first round proper. We were handed a bye in the 1st Qualifying Round and then a home tie in the 2nd Qualifying Round against Herefordshire based Kington Town. However, since the draw was made, Kington Town have resigned from the West Midlands Regional League and thus we have been handed a walkover to the first round proper.
Back to tonight’s match, following Saturday’s excellent result we have the chance to build some real momentum and to get the season off to a great start. Let’s all get behind the boys as we face tough adversaries in Uttoxeter Town. COME ON YOU BEARS, and lets grab the three points!
