Good afternoon and welcome to the Trevor Brown Memorial Ground for today’s Total Motion Midland Football League 1st Division fixture against Atherstone Town. I would like to extend a warm Paget welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Atherstone who have made the journey to be here today.
Today’s game marks our final home league game of the season and our final home game as tenants at Boldmere St. Michaels. It only seems fair that I should thank our landlords for giving us a home for the past five years and in particular Parso, Statto, Pauline and Rory who have all made us feel welcome during our time here. The Trevor Brown Memorial Ground will always have fond memories for Paget. In our time here we have won promotion twice and we have won two cup competitions and hopefully we can make that a third cup, when we face Boldmere St. Michaels here on Monday May 7th (KO 2pm) in the final of the Sutton Coldfield Charity Cup. The time is right for us to move on and to continue our progression and we are all looking forward to kicking off next season at Sutton Coldfield Town’s Coles Lane ground.
I think it’s fair to say that whatever happens over the remaining three league games, we will be able to look back on this season as one of success. Following our promotion last season, we were many ‘experts’ tips to be relegated. Despite having no playing budget whatsoever, not even to cover players travelling expenses, we have more than held our own, spending the vast majority of the season in the top half of the division and we have given ourselves a solid platform to build from next season.
Every season is a learning curve and this one has been just that. The difference both on and off the pitch between step 7 and step 6 football is massive and it is great to see that we have established solid foundations now at this level which will hopefully bode well for Paget’s future.
I must take this opportunity to thank all the players, management, coaches, staff and volunteers, as well as our supporters for their help and assistance, commitment and endeavour throughout the 2017/18 season. The progression we have made in the last five or so seasons is remarkable and you have all played an integral role in getting us to where we are now.
The season may be drawing to a close but the hard work starts now. There are players to be signed, sponsors to be secured, new kit to be ordered and new relationships to build as we look to continue our trend of finishing in a higher league position with each passing season.
Keep your eyes open throughout the summer as we hope to make several significant announcements that could push ‘little old Paget’ onto the next level.
